Lita Albuquerque, Guardian of the Earth

DETAILS

Project Overview

NAJMA Returns (Guardian of the Earth) draws from Albuquerque’s 2021 performance at the Giza Plateau, where she embodied NAJMA, a futuristic astronaut figure, moving through the desert before collapsing in an act of grief and reverence. The sculpture continues that narrative, sitting between performance, land art, and storytelling. Emerging from the earth in a striking blue form, NAJMA becomes a physical link between ground and sky. The 33 solar disks along her back mirror the 33 vertebrae of the human spine, tying the body to cosmic and environmental systems, and reinforcing themes of connection, memory, and responsibility to the Earth.

Project Overview

Igniting Light is an immersive art installation by Lita Albuquerque, exploring the interplay of light, color, and space. The work transforms the environment into a dynamic, experiential canvas where viewers engage with light as both material and medium.

The installation invites audiences to reflect on perception, energy, and the transformative power of light, making the space both contemplative and visually striking.

CONCEPT & Process

Story Behind the Artwork

Albuquerque’s Igniting Light focuses on the dynamic qualities of light in shaping perception and experience. By carefully arranging colored light and reflective elements, the artist creates an environment that feels alive, responsive, and immersive.

The creative process blends artistic intuition with technical precision: planning light placement, sequencing illumination, and coordinating interaction with the architectural or natural space. The result is a captivating, ephemeral experience that engages audiences in both emotional and visual ways.

Beyond its visual spectacle, Igniting Light encourages viewers to consider the intangible qualities of light and color as forces that influence mood, memory, and spatial awareness. Each installation is designed to be site-specific, responding to the unique geometry, textures, and natural light of its environment. In this way, the artwork not only transforms the physical space but also invites a contemplative, almost meditative engagement, leaving a lasting impression on all who experience it.
